Author Interview: Naomi Shihab Nye on Poetry and Young Adult Writing (0)
“Before you know what kindness really is/ you must lose things, feel the future dissolve in a moment/ like salt in a weakened broth.” Just reading these opening lines to Naomi Shihab Nye’s poem “Kindness,” readers can begin to feel the wisdom behind Nye’s words. Her rich Palestinian-American heritage and travels across the world inspire Nye to write about our shared humanities. The author of the poetry collection “19 Varieties of Gazelle: Poems of the Middle East”, Nye’s talents also extend beyond the realm of verse writing. Nye is also the author of picture books and young adult novels, including “There is No Long Distance Now.” Nye tells Teen Voices about her latest projects and discusses her passion for engaging young readers.

Fiction: “Colors” (0)
“Holding hands with my best friend, we twirled in circles around her backyard. We laughed and grinned and promised to never let go.” I don’t know what provoked this sudden flashback. It was just another day, not that I have usual days—I don’t like routines—but I found myself sitting in a dim lit coffee house, a cup of black coffee already in my hands, the steam hitting my face. I must have had a strange look on my face. I’m sure it was the one I get when I’m concentrating too hard and that annoying wrinkle between my eyes becomes visibly clear.

Movie Review: “Pariah” (0)
“Pariah” is not a fairytale. The story line is not wrapped neatly in a bow; the plot does not resemble an ice cream sundae with a cherry on top. It is real. It is disturbing, depressing, heart wrenching—but most of all, it is hopeful.

Music Review: “Like A Machine” by Claire London (0)
“Like A Machine” is fantastic album. Claire London has an extremely powerful vibe. While listening I could tell that Claire really felt the things that she was singing about. She brought her personal experiences to her songs, and wanted to tell the world about them. Each song has a totally different meaning.

Education in Ghana (0)
I’m from Ghana, a country in West Africa. I was born here and I’ve lived here all my life. Ghana is a country with a history most of us learn about at a young age via storytelling and myths in school and at home. Aside from all of these spectacular aspects of my country, we’re still faced with poverty. This challenge has led to so many problems. One major effect of this poverty is the country’s high rate of illiteracy.
